There are several ways a Social Textbook can be successfully executed.
The first possible version of a Social Textbook is an ambitious application that bends a blog, wiki and a discussion board into the ultimate social and collaborative learning environment. This option puts great trust in students to only contribute in a scholarly manner. Students will have the ability to edit the textbook text, add links to descriptive sources, and comment and discuss each section of the book. This version of the Social Textbook will allow the ebook to evolve into whatever and where ever the class’ students take it.
What could be the most useful and successful Social Textbook would be the version that does not allow users (the students) to edit or make changes to the content. There is a part of wikis that worries users because they are unsure about the validity of the information presented. This option takes away the ability for students to add, edit, and change the information provided. Instead the users will only be able to utilize the discussion section of the Social Textbook where they will be able to discuss and ask and answer questions with their classmates and instructor.
The third option blends one of the previously mentioned options with a physical, printed textbook. Since the lack of a physical book has been a concern of many polled students a bundled option can be offered where an ebook is included in the price of the printed book. This will allow students to have the comfort of a book that they can highlight and write in as well as the social and collaborative atmosphere the Social Textbook will provide.
